If you’re from ’round these-here parts you’ll know that Kentucky governor Andy Beshear replaced someone who gloried in a reputation for being quarrelsome and defiant. A politician who peddled in division, who cynically ridiculed the gravity of the coronavirus, and who stoked the fires of populist conflict and discord. When the COVID-19 pandemic took the state by surprise, Beshear was thrown into the crucible. And nobody knew what to expect.
Beshear’s strength of character, his nonpartisanship, his faith, his embrace of science and data-based policymaking, and — more than anything — his appeal to a seemingly lost sense of unity and pride has brought conservative and progressive Kentuckians together, and the commonwealth’s health is prevailing as a result.
