I played rock keyboards for a handful of bands in the ’70s and ’80s. Now that I think about it, it all feels a little bit Spinal Tap. Well, because it was. I once loaned Steppenwolf’s manager an organ speaker cabinet before a show, which I watched from backstage. The keyboard player was a guy called Goldy McJohn. He had a huge Afro, a ton of chest hair, and a big beard — none of which went very well with the floral dress he was wearing that day.
